Welcome to Hawes Cottage.
We hope you enjoy your stay here. We have prepared this
information pack to give you details of local information and what is
available in the cottage. If you have any additional questions please
do not hesitate to contact either Maggi or Gordon on any of the numbers
given below. We also invite you to complete a short feedback questionnaire
which will tell us how we can make your stay even more enjoyable in the
future.
The cottages are all built on the excavations from the
tunnels that carry water from Loch Katrine to the north of Glasgow. This
was one of the biggest engineering achievements of the mid 19th century,
details of which can be seen if you visit Loch Katrine visitors centre.
This is a good day out where you can cycle round the loch or take a trip
on the boat that goes the full length of the loch. Both tunnels actually
meet only yards from your front door en route to Mugdock reservoir. You
can follow the track of the tunnels as they cross the burns between Hawes
cottage and the road end, and from the many observation points that can
be seen close to the road.
Although the road is maintained by the water board, the
cottages were originally built for the local forestry workers.
The Thomson family lived 10 happy years in the cottage
next door, bringing up four children in that time. We would love you to
enjoy the environment as much as we did, and hope to direct you towards
the best places to explore in the short time you are here. It is a fantastic
place for children to enjoy a freedom difficult to achieve in a city.
In 2001 we bought the cottage you are in now from our
neighbour George Hawes, (hence Hawes Cottage in his memory). He was an
engineer with the Forestry commission and had lived in the cottage since
1969. We took six months to renovate it. It opened for business late 2002.
